On a recent trip to Hawaii I fell in love with the local "donut": the malasada. Does anyone know where to find malasadas in Southern California?

I know it! There is nothing better than biting into a piping hot Malasada at Leonard's. Whenever I visit Hawaii, I make a point to go there at least once. They are a part of Aloha culture! Warm and salty air, blue Oahu waves, white sand. A few blocks from a busy crowded downtown Waikiki beach, on Kapuhula Ave, there is Leonard’s. Famous, but not touristy.

They make stuffed Malasadas, but I still like cinnamon-sugar coated regular ones. Sadly, Leonard's doesn't ship their treasures. But, cold a-few-hour-old Malasadas are not really exciting.

I have tried L&L, but unfortunately, their Malasadas are not even close to Leonard’s. Sorry, but if you try to find something similar, you are going to disappoint yourself.

Save them for your next Hawaiian vacation!

Like the gentleman above mentions, there's a good chance that your local L&L's might have them. I'm in SoCal too, and one of the three L&L's nearest me carries malasadas (the other two don't). L&L's also has plate-lunch type food that's super affordable and yummy.

If you want a more upscale restaurant in L.A. that serves malasadas, I'd highly recommend Yi Cuisine in Hollywood. They're at 7910 3rd street and serve pan-Asian Hawaiian/Chinese/Filipino/French food as well as malasadas. Here's a link to their website, where you can view their full menu:

The other links below have reviews of Yi from the L.A. Times and other sources. Happy dining!

Aloha! Try a google search for malasadas for recipes and then you wil never have to search for them. Easy to make at home! Yeah, I know, I like to just go buy stuff ready made too. Good Luck
